Dordogne Caves Tour: Prehistoric Caves Tour of Dordogne of Combarelles, Font de Gaume, Lascaux, and Rouffignac
Day 1: Dordogne Caves Tour, Rouffignac, Les Eyzies de Tayac’s Prehistoric Museum, Overnight in Sarlat or Surrounding Area
– Travel to Les Eyzies de Tayac, tour Rouffignac and the prehistoric museum, Overnight in Les Eyzies de Tayac
Your first stop on this private Dordogne caves tour is the village of Les Eyzies de Tayac, where France’s prehistoric ancestors made their home some 40,000 years ago. Situated in the Vezere Valley, Les Eyzies is located in one of the most beautiful and rugged areas in the country, dotted with unusual rock formations, dramatic cliffs and historic caves.
Today you will tour Les Eyzies’ National Prehistoric Museum, which houses one of the world’s most complete collections of prehistoric artifacts. Through the museum’s interactive displays, you will travel through time to the Palaeolithic era and learn about modern man’s ancestors, from the Neanderthals to the Cro-Magnons.
After this great introduction to the region and its pre-historic origins, your private tour escort will take you to Rouffignac Cave. This cave, several miles long, boasts more than 150 paintings of woolly mammoths, bisons, rhinoceros, ibex and other ancient fauna. You’ll take a trip on an electric underground train to see the painted walls.
Day 2: Dordogne Caves Tour of Lascaux, Font de Gaume, Combarelles, Return to Hotel in Sarlat
Today, your Dordogne caves tour will take you to three other well-known caves in the area, each with its own unique character: Combarelles for its etchings, Font de Gaume for its paintings and Lascaux for its sheer beauty.
Combarelles is a monument to the Magdalenian peoples of the Upper Palaeolithic era – otherwise known as the “Age of the Reindeer.” The cave’s twin galleries features more than 600 mostly engraved images on its walls. Symbolic drawings accompany etchings depicting a diversity of fauna, including bears, lions, horses, and reindeer.
Next on your Dordogne cave tour is Font de Gaume cave, which contains more than 200 polychrome paintings. You’ll twist through the cave’s passages to see more than 30 paintings of bison and other animal figures, startling in their subtle use of color and shading.
Last on your Dordogne cave tour is Lascaux. While perhaps the most famous cave in the area, Lascaux is now closed to avoid further damage to its prehistoric “Sistine Chapel.” However, you will enjoy a tour of the reproduction cave, faithfully and painstakingly rendered by a team of artists and sculptors.
You will be escorted by private vehicle back to your starting point in Les Eyzies.
