Classic London Sights Featuring Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London

This privately guided tour features the classic sights of London. Visit Westminster Abbey, the Changing of the Guard, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square by luxury vehicle.

Your tour begins with a visit inside Westminster Abbey, the 700-year-old coronation church of England. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this Gothic church is one of the most famous architectural structures in London. The church boasts the highest Gothic vault in England, at nearly 102 feet, and features such classic Gothic features as pointed arches, ribbed vaulting, rose windows and flying buttresses. The church also hosts the royal weddings, most recently Prince Williams’ wedding to Kate Middleton, and is the final resting place of 17 monarchs and thousands of other famous figures.

We’ll next have a look at the Houses of Parliament (also known as the Palaces of Westminster), overlooking the Thames River. The House of Lords and House of Commons both have their meeting chambers here. This Neo-Gothic building is best known and recognized for the Elizabeth Tower, more commonly known as Big Ben. More than 150 years old, Big Ben is the world’s third tallest freestanding clock tower. Depending on when we arrive you may get to hear its melodious hourly chimes.

Next stop will be Buckingham Palace, where we will witness the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony. The 775-room palace has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837 and today as the working administrative headquarters of the Monarch.

We will move along to Trafalgar Square, a public plaza, built around the area formerly known as Charing Cross. We will stroll across the square, visiting Nelson’s Column, guarded by four lion statues, as well as view some contemporary sculpture in the plaza.

Our next visit will be to St. Paul’s Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral whose majestic dome has dominated the city skyline for over 300 years. The 365-foot-high, Baroque style church was the tallest building in London from more than 200 years; the London skyscraper known as “The Shard” now claims that title (in fact the tallest building in the European Union). The cathedral has seen many changes over the centuries, and was rebuilt entirely after the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Our tour will conclude with a visit inside the Tower of London, a historic castle, palace and fortress. The castle and its many uses have evolved throughout the centuries, since first conceived after the Norman invasion of 1066, from prison to royal residence and even zoo.  You will have a chance to view the Crown Jewels, still regularly used by The Queen, which feature some of the most exquisite diamonds in the world. The Tower is said to be haunted by the ghost of the beheaded queen Anne Boleyn; your private guide will share with you this and other intriguing facts and rumors about the Tower’s history. Time permitting you can also tour the site of the former Royal Mint.

As with all of our private tours, this tour can be customized to include the sights you’re most interested in visiting.
