Day 2: D-Day Tour, Overnight in Bayeux
This private Normandy tour conducted by one of our exceptional Normandy tour guides takes you to Normandy’s WWII sites. Nearly 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers participated in the Normandy landings, which was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operations were planned months in advance of the June 6, 1944 events, which your expert tour guide will bring to life for you during visits to memorials, museums and other interpretive D-Day sites.
This private Normandy tour begins at Pointe du Hoc, one of the Germans’ strategic fortifications along the Normandy coast. The Germans had built 6 case mates here to house a battery of 155-mm guns, which threatened Allied landings and in turn risking heavy casualties in the landing forces. Today Pointe du Hoc features a memorial dedicated to the heroic battle. The site remains dotted with bomb craters and fortification remains.
Your private Normandy tour then proceeds to Omaha Beach, the site of a devastating battle where thousands of American soldiers lost their lives during D-Day. You will visit this six-mile long beach and its memorial to the fallen Americans of this ill-fated battle.
Your private Normandy tour then continues to the American Cemetery and the Visitor Center in Colleville-sur-Mer. You will have time here to pay homage to the graves of nearly 10,000 soldiers, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations, and visit the Cemetery’s Memorial, the Wall of Missing, Chapel, and various special tombs. You will visit the visitor center, which will introduce you to the human stories and military maneuvers of D-Day in Normandy through photos, films, interactive displays and artifacts.
Next stop, our Normandy tour guide will show you Arromanches (British sector), a historic site best known for its artificial “Mulberry” port, a critical success factor in the Normandy landings. By June 1944, more than 300,000 men, 54,000 vehicles, and 104,000 tons of supplies had landed here. You will stop at a viewpoint at the top to see the artificial port on the sea.
From Arromanches, your Normandy tour guide will drive you to Longues sur Mer, the German coastal long range artillery battery that formed a part of Germany’s Atlantic Wall coastal fortifications. Here you can see the remains of the huge concrete casemates that protected each of the four 150mm navy guns that covered Omaha and Gold beaches, two of the beaches used for the D-Day landings. The site also included a command post and several defensive machine guns.
Day 3: Calvados, Pays d’Auge, Overnight in Bayeux
Today you will spend some time in Calvados and visit a prestigious cider and calvados production in Normandy. This four-generation family owned establishment is not only renowned for its traditional 75 year aged calvados but also for its innovative products around the apple, notable, calvados cream, pommeau and sparkling apple juice. The owners are happy to welcome you personally and share a tasting with you. They are delighted to have a cultural exchange.
In the afternoon, you are invited to discover the ‘back roads of Pays d’Auge, stopping into small antique shops, countryside chapel accessible only by foot, and breathtaking views of the Pay d’Auge Valley. Your guide will point out the ‘must see’ points and share with you many local anecdotes.
Day 4: Mont Sainte Michel & Villedieu-les-Poeles, Transport Back to Paris Airport or Hotel
This is the last day of this private Normandy tour. Today, you will have a day trip to Mont St. Michel, one of the most unforgettable places in France. Mont St. Michel, whose namesake bay boasts one of the world’s highest tidal ranges, is a truly memorable sight. An excellent audio guide will accompany your tour of the Mont St. Michel Abbey which was founded at the turn of the 8th century and became a major cultural and pilgrimage center during the Middle Ages. You will visit the Romanesque Church, the Gothic “Marvel” with the monk’s cloisters and refectory, the Knights Room, the Guest Room, the Undercroft, the Refectory, and more. The guided Mont St. Michel tour also includes several chapels: St. Stephen, St. Martin, Our Lady Underground, St. Mary Magdalene, and the 11th-century Crypt of the 30 Candles. You will also stroll the steep narrow streets of the village and its ramparts.
After your tour of Mont St. Michel, you will stop and tour the town of Villedieu les Poêles, famous for its numerous artisan shops selling exceptional goods made of leather, lace, copper and tin.
Day 5: Tour Honfleur, Transport Back to Paris Airport or Hotel
Today, you will begin with a tour of Honfleur, a charming port town. At the heart of Honfleur, the old dock is full of character, from its old slate-fronted houses to the art galleries and cafes located in converted salt stores. Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet were among the famous impressionist painters who drew inspiration from Honfleur’s port.
You will visit a few sights in town, perhaps St. Catherine’s Church, which is the largest wooden church in France, built by the town’s shipbuilders in the late 15th century. The Eugene Boudin Museum, set in a 19th century chapel, is also of interest. If you happen to be here on market day, Honfleur’s farmer and flea market is also fun places to stroll and shop.
You will be dropped you off either in Normandy or at the airport, train station or hotel in Paris.
