DAY TRIP FROM ROME: ORVIETO WITH WINE TASTING
This wine tour from Rome takes you to medieval Orvieto, one of the most beautiful town in Umbria dating back to the Etruscan period, 9th Century B.C. It sits dramatically high up on top of a tufo, a volcanic rock, overlooking the valley dotted with cypress trees. You will explore this charming hilltop town with has charming pedestrianized streets filled with some interesting shops, cafes and restaurants.
The colorful Gothic cathedral has the beautiful Chapel of San Brizio, with Luca Signorelli’s frescoes of the Day of Judgment and Life after Death. The brilliant artist’s frescoes depicts the turbulent political and religious times of the late 1400s.
You will also enjoy a tour of the Orvieto Underground (public or private) where you will see caves, stairs, passageways and tunnels which are all unchanged for over 2,500 years. Guided tours of the medieval caves offer a glimpse into how these ancient Italians lived, from the remains of an old olive press to a pigeon coop where the birds were reared for roasting.
You will then proceed to the countryside for a visit to a vineyard for wine tasting of the famous Orvieto Classico. We have a couple of wine producers in the area. You may visit a family owned producer with Etruscan wine cellar. Optional: Lunch can be arranged at the winery.
