Day 5 – Day in Verona, Overnight in Verona
An amazing city in every sense, Verona has plenty of historical monuments that date back two thousand years. The city’s sights include a famous Amphitheatre and Roman theater; Castelvecchio and the Scaligero bridge; Gavi’s Triumphal Arch, Piazza delle Erbe with a fountain dating back to the mid 1300s and monumental gateways that greet visitors and depict the grandeur of the Roman empire. An expert local guide will conduct a 3-hour walking tour of this great city.
The Della Scala family who once ruled the city transformed Verona’s appearance forever with its fortifications, castles, palaces, squares and last but not least, their splendid intricate funerary monuments, the Arche Scaligere.
Verona is also famous as the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. You will visit Juliet’s house and the famous balcony. Beyond its historical features, Verona has beautiful modern shops, restaurants and cafes you can enjoy. We will have plenty of time to explore this great city. The rest of the day is ours to do as we please. (Breakfast)
Day 6 – Lake Garda: Sirmione & Scaliger Castle, Valpolicella Region: Winery Visit & Wine Tasting, Overnight in Verona
Our day trip today features the Valpolicella region, Sirmione and Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. You will enjoy a breathtaking drive along Lake Garda’s shores, lined with wildflowers, cypress and pine trees, and olive and lemon groves. The lake is a major tourist draw, and the towns flanking it boast many popular holiday resorts.
We will visit Sirmione, set along a narrow peninsula on the southern portion of the lake. There are many interesting historical sights to see here, including the 13th century Scaliger castle (Rocca Scaligera) built as part of a defense network surrounding Verona. Next to the castle is the 12th century Sant’Anna della Rocca church with well-preserved frescoes which we will ee. Free time after the guided tour to explore the town and perhaps stop in one of its numerous cafes and local shops.
Our Italy women’s tours always include wine tasting so we will visit a family-run winery located in the area of Paverno, in the heart of the historic Valpolicella region. Founded in 2nd century B.C. and once prosperous under the Venetian rule during the 15th century through the end of the 18th century, Vicenza, has an elegant and unique look. This is due to the city’s Palladian style architecture of the buildings and villas designed by the famous Andrea Palladio.
