(B = Breakfast, L = Lunch,  D = Dinner)

DAY 1. Arrival Day in Bern, Switzerland; Welcome Dinner, Overnight in Bern.

You will be picked up at the airport in Geneva, then take the train to Bern, where your Switzerland tour will begin.  Evening stroll after settling into your hotel, followed by aperitif and our welcome dinner.  (D)

DAY 2. Walking Tour of Bern, Market Day in Bern, Overnight in Bern.

We start our women's tour in Switzerland. We will tour Bern on foot, starting with a visit to one of the town’s beautiful open-air markets.  We’ll continue with a walking tour of Bern’s historic city center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This modern city has retained its medieval feel, with its historic buildings, towers, fountains and homes remarkably well preserved. We will visit the Zytglogge, a medieval clock tower with mechanical figures, and peruse some of the shops in one of the longest covered shopping arcades in Europe.  Other sights here include a spectacular 15th century Gothic cathedral, one of Einstein’s residences, and a rose garden offering a gorgeous panoramic view of the medieval city center. We also have the possibility to visit the Zentrum Paul Klee. Located on the city outskirts, this museum houses the most comprehensive collection of works by the Swiss artist Paul Klee.

Bern’s Old Town comes alive at night, with bars, restaurants and cabarets frequented by locals and tourists alike. Your tour manager will be on hand to take you out on the town if that is of interest. (B)

Day 3. Lucerne Excursion, Glacier Garden, Overnight in Bern

Today, we will take a scenic hour and a half train ride to Lucerne in Switzerland. We’ll tour Lucern on foot, visiting such historic sights as a 14th century covered wooden footbridge, town hall, various squares and public works of art, and the Lion Monument, carved into a sandstone cliff above Lucerne in honor of the Swiss Guards who died while trying to save Marie Antoinette’s life.

We will also enjoy a boat ride on beautiful Lake Lucerne and a visit to the Glacier Garden. This natural park and museum features “glacial potholes” formed during the last ice age, with fossilized mussels, palm leaves and other natural artifacts indicating Lucerne’s past as a subtropical beach some 20 million years ago.

You will also have free time to explore the city on your own. As always, your tour escort is available for a stroll, mealtime company or help of any kind at any time. Lucerne has many wonderful art museums, including the famous Rosengart Collection, which boasts over 50 works by Picasso and 100 by Paul Klee, among many other classic modern painters. The Kuntzmuseum Luzern is another favorite for art aficionados, featuring Swiss art from the Renaissance to the present. (B, L)

DAY 4. Travel from Bern to Zermatt, Overnight in Zermatt

Today we’ll make our way to Zermatt, a lovely car-free town in the shadows of the mighty Matterhorn. We can take the old Swiss railway, which dates from 1898, for a short excursion to Gornergrat. You will be blown away by the view of 29 snowy white peaks here, all around 13,000 feet high. We can have a light lunch in the restaurant here, then return to Zermatt for an afternoon stroll. Those who are eager to learn more about the area can visit the Matterhorn Museum, which depicts the history of this famous mountain, the first ascent and the transformation of Zermatt from unknown village to world-reknown resort town.

If we are lucky, we may also be serenaded by musicians playing traditional folk music in the town square. (B)

DAY 5.  Glacier Express, St. Moritz, Overnight in St. Moritz

Today we’ll take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Cascading waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, glacial ice fields, and chalet-dotted villages will scroll past your window on this unforgettable seven-hour journey.  We’ll arrive in St. Moritz, an exclusive mountain resort town, in the afternoon. Free time in the afternoon to explore on your own. (B)

DAY 6.  Lichtenstein, Vaduz, Overnight in Salzburg

Today we will dine in three different countries: breakfast in Switzerland, lunch in Lichtenstein, and dinner in Austria. We will take private transportation to Salzburg, stopping en route in Vaduz, capital of Lichtenstein, one of the smallest but most prosperous European states. While Vaduz claims a population of just 5,100, there are many sights to see here, from its many museums to its cliffside castle, and we will visit a few.  Group dinner is planned upon our arrival in Salzburg.  (B, L, D)

DAY 7.  Day in Salzburg, Overnight in Salzburg

This morning our women's small group tour of Switzerland and Austria will take us on a guided tour of Salzburg, the beautiful historic birthplace of Mozart and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The sights we may visit here include Mozart's residence and birthplace, the Salzburg Museum, the early Baroque Salzburg Cathedral, and Hohensalzburg Fortress, the largest preserved fortress in central Europe. You will have the afternoon and evening free to explore Salzburg on your own. (B)

DAY 8. Travel from Salzburg to Vienna, Overnight in Vienna

Today, our women's trip in Austria continues. We will travel along the Danube Valley to Vienna, visiting the monastic community of Melk on our way. Melk Abbey, situated on a rocky hill overlooking the Danube, is the oldest monastery in Austria. We'll tour a beautiful abbey. The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1089, but the current Baroque abbey was built in the 18th century. Far from austere, the abbey is resplendent with marble sculptures, frescoes and golden towers.

We will arrive Vienna after lunch, and stroll the town center in the late afternoon or evening.  (B, L)

DAY 9. Day in Vienna, Schönbrunn Palace, Farewell Dinner, Overnight in Vienna

In the morning, we will visit the Hapsburgs’ magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, which is a massive complex including the palace itself, a massive park with fountains and statues, and the world’s oldest zoo. A tour of the palace will take you on a journey through the centuries,   hearing about the history of Vienna and the lives of the rulers who lived in the palace.

After the palace visit, you will have free time to explore the city and visit other sights.  You may also relax in one of the traditional coffeehouses that have been a part of Viennese culture and tradition since the Turks invaded the town in 1683.  You will also want to sample Vienna’s delectable sweet treats like the chocolate Sachertorte.  Tonight is the last night of our women's tour of Austria and Switzerland.  We will have a farewell dinner together this evening. (B, D)

DAY 10.  Departure Day

Prepare for your flight home.  (B)
