Jewels of Tuscany:  San Gimignano & Volterra Tour – Duration 9 Hours

Opportunities to Visit a Farm in Tuscany,

Have Lunch and Sample the Farm's Wine,

Olive Oil, Cured Meats and Other Things They Produce.

Go Off the Tourist Path and Tour Volterra.

Enjoy a scenic ride through the countryside and tour two of the jewels of Tuscany: San Gimignano and Volterra.

We will take you to the medieval walled city of San Gimignano, your first stop. You'll have the first sight of the famous towers of San Gimignano from afar.  There were originally 72 towers but only 15 remains today. You will explore San Gimignano with your English-speaking guide. You will stop in the main squares, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo. You will have some free time to visit other sites:  La Collegiata church, the civic museum, the fortress, the torture museum and climb the big tower called Torre Grossa.  Great shopping opportunities are in the streets of San Giovanni and San Matteo.  Make a point to stop for gelato at one of the best Gelateria in Italy in Piazza della Cisterna.

You may also stop at a family owned farm where wonderful wine, olive oils, cured meats and honey are produced.  They raise cattle and grow many things including saffron and olives.  You can have lunch here while sitting out on their terrace overlooking the valley and the city of San Gimignano beyond.  Lunch reservations essential.   Also during lunch, you will be served San Gimignano's great white wine called Vernaccia.

You will also travel to where most tourist don't go.   We'll take you to the charming walled city of Volterra, a delightful non-touristy town of Etruscan origins.  It is enclosed by 12-century walls, with remnants of its defensive walls and a gate, Porta All'Arco, dating back to 7th Century B.C.  You will discover its major sites, including a 1st century B.C. Roman theater.  It is known for alabaster.  Alabaster shops are everywhere and a visit to their wonderful alabaster museum may be of interest.   You will best enjoy this town by exploring its narrow cobbled streets and plazas.
